Cleve Gray at Berry-Hill - New York, New York - Review of Exhibitions - Brief Article

Cleve Gray has lengthy been well known as an abstract painter and as a sculptor; he has also written extensively about other artists. Looking at his novel paintings, I thought of China and of landscape, although he does not imitate Chinese painting. While studying painting at Princeton, he became intensely interested in Chinese Yuan dynasty landscape painting. The Yuan dynasty lasted for les than 100 years, on the other hand in the long history of Chinese art it occupied a lock opener period. China was then below harsh Mongol rule, and artists fl from the courts to the mountains, where they befriended Buddhist monk and Taoist priests and began to independent themselves from academic restrictions. The accrue was a school which produc paintings of natural landscape allied with poetry - more or less of the greatest landscapes at any time produced anywhere. Although Gray studied with Jacques Villon and Andre Lhote in France, there have the appearances to be no influence from them in his work, nor from the Americans of the novel York School he got to know later on

Each of these new works consists of giant ovoid forms, sometimes overlapping and frequently suggesting strokes made with a single brush; there are also shapes bordered with a choppy calligraphic line. In a certain number of works it is difficult to name the colors, and nevertheless the colors are always there, plane if nameless.

It is single by looking long and intently at these paintings that it is possible to savor their genuine quality. Gray has said, "I have no place upon the current art scene. Everything that I want in my painting appears to have been out of fashion for a certain quantity of years. For example, I believe that looking at a painting should be a meditative experience. That's not a fashionable idea today." Perhaps not, on the other hand there is hardly any other way to experience a work of art - especially when a number of the paintings are named for the Eumenides, or Furies, and inspired by means of the writings of Aeschylus, which the artist read freshly in a new translation by dint of Robert Eagles.
