Jeff Gambill at Rosamund Felsen - Santa Monica, California - Review of Exhibitions - Brief ArticleJeff Gambill takes abstraction into a fresh area, accompanying his paintings with autobiographical writings that invest his richly painted, biomorphic shapes with personal symbolic easy in mind Gambill's sometimes lush, sometimes piquant colors further temptation viewers into the written narratives, which here focus upon his Pentecostal religious conversion while in junior high institute in Northern California. The paintings maintain an old-fashioned flatness and are organized with a Hofmannesque faculty of perception of drama. These forest and lime virids butterscotches and golden browns act as a kind of theatrical lighting, setting not on the sometimes ominous and many times comical play of symbolic shapes.
