James Stroud at Galerie Mourlot - Boston, Massachusetts - Review of Exhibitions - Brief ArticleMost Boston viewers know James Stroud for his hard-edged black-and-white geometric paintings and prints, and for his valueed print studio that turns on the outside meticulous editions for many regional artists. The intriguing pieces in this new show are departures in medium and palette, admitting minimalist geometry remains. These small (18-by-18-inch) square paintings, all 1995 occupy primary colors whose shimmer tend hitherwards from an unusual blend of ingredients borrowed from the print studio: layers of translucent French printing oils are make revolveed onto aluminum, copper or stainless-steel plates. Overlapping bring forwards color-blended shapes on smooth, wet-looking surfaces. In R One/2 Stroud has applied a base of r to aluminum, and then a thin layer of black in horizontal and vertical bars along the cutting sides The result is a nine-square pattern of shaded black and gray-red with a center square of the original r The pattern be likes the plaid from a lumberjack's shirt, on the other hand light dimly reflected from the metal's surface revolves the subtle shadings and fuzzy delineations into a more sensual optical experience. 4 BT also oil upon aluminum, is a four-square pattern; diagonally opposite squares are opaque, unmixed virid and orange, while the other sum of two units are blended colors. These lighter tones allow more light to reach the metal plate, creating lush, mysterious, soft-focus deepnesss Looking into them is like gazing into jello On single wall of the gallery was an installation, titled Stations, consisting of 10 works upon copper and stainless steel hung in sum of two units unaligned rows. The arrangement resembl semaphores, although mathematical rather than linguistic digests are embedded in these works. The first five make a succession in which from one to five dark shapes come up from monochrome plates, while the next to the first five are subdivided into fill ups of blended colors. The patterns themselves are simple--Station 1/3 is a tricolor of r golden and blue stripes. Perhaps the mathematical progressions signal Stroud's novel shift from binary codes of black and white to the numberless possibilities of color.
