NANOELECTRONICS: Chemical Control of Molecular Switches.


A research team at the Pennsylvania State University has approach up with a means of stabilizing molecular switches, based upon chemical interactions with surrounding indivisible particles The method, described in the October 6 2004 issue of Journal of the American Chemical Society, allows command of the electronic state of oligo phenlylene-ethynylene atoms (OPEs) through the action of an electric field upon functional groups attached to the indivisible particles

OPEs have previously been shown to switch between conductive (on) and non-conductive (off) states,
