Nanacy Rubins at Paul Kasmin - sculpture - New York, New York - Review Of Exhibitions

This two-room present to view of sculpture (Mattresses and Cakes) and single big (14-by-19 foot) Drawing was a real case of this 'n' that. What's report about Rubin's work is her obsessive and ludicrously directed cartoon activity that seemingly plunked these pieces into their designated plays at Paul Kasmin. The feverish intelligence that has in previous displays assembled water heaters and airplane parts into fanatic assemblages has also committed the aforementioned Drawing--actually it consisted of 11 or with equal reason (since they were plastered upon one another, it was hard to tell): colossal pieces of paper heavily overspreaded with graphite. They looked like tar paper and gleamed against the judiciously lit white wall. The way they were arranged they resembl a human hand, sum of two units fingers stretching up onto the filigreed metal ceiling that's similar a part of every elderly SoHo building. Closer up they were intensely pleasurable to view: the stubbornly overspreaded paper surface with its impressible frayed edges, bends and tears that evolv from its making. The corners and cutting sides were curled, and they made small batlike shadows. It was a simple on the other hand expressive piece about totalness of materials, drawing and placement.

Rather than simply viewing Mattresses and Cakes, single was better off stepping back into the shadowy corner behind the plastic art like a bad child and experiencing its shape. It was one as well as the other ornery and playful, a crumpl ball of jutting mattresses (Yes!) make revolveed and cinched tightly with metal bands. Mattress ticking (or at least the examples she picked) is about patterns: stripes, pale leafy designs, recent doggies or bright trucks and racing cars. They were all wrapped up in each other, these patterns; and then, rapiered away in corners or prominently plopp upon the sculpture's soft heaving shelfs were cakes--vanilla and chocolate with apportionments of frosting and some coconut Sometimes it was just a schmeer

I hate to drag in feminism, on the other hand this might be the present to view that put it to bed. Mattresses are things of the dwelling and who makes a cake on the contrary Mom? Still, there was a certain quantity of masculine force here too, a military might that wrapped up these mattresses like in the way that many bedrolls (and all of domesticity with them). Inside the vast conglomeration was a respectable network of hasps and chains and bolts to grasp it together. And that's that. with equal reason maybe now someone will mention one by one me why you can't transplant those tags attached to each mattress on earth.
