Employment and unemployment developments, December 2005

Total nonfarm payroll business increased by 108,000 in December, and the unemployment rate was little changed at 49 percent The December increase in payroll business followed a gain of 305000 in November (as revised). Several industries added piece of works over the month, including regimen services, professional and business services, health care, and manufacturing.

Unemployment

one as well as the other the unemployment rate, 4.9 percent and the number of unemploy someones 7.4 million, were little changed in December. The unemployment rate has ranged from 49 to 51 percent since March.

The unemployment rates for adult men (43 percent) adult women (45 percent) whites (43 percent) and Hispanics or Latinos (60 percent) showed little or no change in December. The jobles rates for teenagers (152 percent) and blacks (93 percent) declined above the month; the rate for black teenagers had an unusually large decline and inhuman to 24.4 percent. The unemployment rate for Asians was 38 percent not seasonally adjusted. (See tables A-3, A-4, and A-13.)

In December, 182 percent of the unemploy had been without a piece of work for 27 weeks or longer compared with 204 percent a year earlier. (See table A-12.)

Total calling and the labor force

Total calling at 142.8 million in December, was little changed above the month but was 26 million higher than a year earlier. The employment-population ratio held at 628 percent in December, 04 percentage point higher than a year earlier. The labor force participation rate, at 660 percent was unchanged above the year. (See table A-3.)

The number of someones who work part time for economic reasons, at 41 million, was about unchanged in December on the other hand was down by 327,000 above the year. This category includes ones who indicated that they would like to work filled time but were working part time because their hours had been wound back or because they were unable to find full-time piece of works (See table A-7.)

The number of someones marginally attached to the labor force was 16 million in December, about the same as a year earlier. (Data are not seasonally adjusted.) These individuals wanted and were available to work and had gazeed for a job sometime in the prior 12 month They were not enumerateed as unemployed, however, because they did not actively search for work in the 4 weeks preceding the view Among the marginally attached, there were 451000 discouraged workers in December, essentially the same as a year earlier. Discouraged workers were not generally looking for work specifically because they believed no piece of works were available for them. The other 11 million marginally attached someones had not searched for work for reasons like as school attendance or family responsibilities. (See table A-38.)

avocation status of Hurricane Katrina evacuees

Beginning in October, questions were added to the household view to identify persons who evacuated from their domiciles even temporarily, due to Hurricane Katrina. Data mustered through these questions do not account for all evacuees; ones living outside of the design of the survey--such as those living in inns or shelters--are not included. The questions were asked of ones in the household survey sample from one extremity to the other of the country, since some evacuees relocated far from the storm-affected areas. An additional question determined whether evacuees had go [i]or[/i] come backed to their homes by the time of the survey

These additional questions provided information to analyze the craft status of this subgroup of evacuees. The total number of evacuees estimated from the household scan may change from month to month as family move in and out of the design of the survey.

Information gathered in December showed that about 11 million ones age 16 and over had evacuated from where they were living in August to be paid to Hurricane Katrina. These evacuees either had turn backed to their homes or were living in other residential units overspreaded in the survey in December. About 600000 of the evacuees had go [i]or[/i] come backed to their August 2005 residences. Of all evacuees identified, 582 percent were in the labor force in December. The employment-population ratio for these evacuees was 510 percent The unemployment rate for someones identified as evacuees was 124 percent; it was abundant higher for evacuees who had not go [i]or[/i] come backed home (20.7 percent) than for those who had get backed (5.6 percent).

Industry payroll employment

Total nonfarm payroll trade rose by 108,000 in December to 1345 million, seasonally adjusted. This increase followed a gain of 305000 in November (as revised). above the year, payroll employment grew by dint of 2.0 million. December's increase included gains in manufacturing, health care, subsistence services and drinking places, and professional and business services. (See table B-3)

In December, manufacturing trade increased by 18,000, after edging up in November. greatest in quantity of December's increase occurred in durable serviceables which added 15,000 jobs. craft rose in several of the constituting industries, including wood products and computer and electronic products
