Kerry James Marshall at Jack Shainman - art exhibition, New York, New York

In the the shallow, stagelike spaces of Kerry James Marshall's large unstretched canvases, black men and women attitude and turn with a majestic faculty of perception of inner stillness. Their faces are wide-eyed and ceremonial even when they are smiling. The air around them buzze with signs: voodoo hex signs musical staves with snatches of carol lyrics, and the flames of votive candles, all hovering like souls of cultural memories.

a certain quantity of of the situations that Marshall casts his figures into are clearly allegorical. In They Know That I Know, a man and a woman lie wrapped together in a bedroll, environed by branching genealogical "trees" that chart racial migrations. Marshall apparently conceived of this painting after coming across just similar a genealogical chart that had no entrance for Negroid peoples (even the Lapps had their have a title to little shoot). In Voyager, a two are in a small boat. The woman sits, while the standing man is obscur by dint of the triangle made by the sail. "Wanderer" is written upon the boat's prow--the name of the last slave ship to tend hitherward to America. There's something about the figures themselves, their knowingness. As in Frida Kahlo's self-portraits, these figures appear consciously to inhabit their fate. This is a quality that especially charismatic defence actors occasionally suggest, but painting hasn't been pertain toed with character or fate for a certain number of time.
