Daniel Martinez at Robert Berman - art exhibition; Santa Monica, CaliforniaIn this clump of objects made from 1990 to '92 Daniel Martinez reverses the signage and status icons of the dominant contemporary tillage Following a conceptual orientation, he relies upon language and its literal deconstruction, as evidenced in typographic fracturing, misspellings and occasional poor grammar. In his works, historical citations from the Ivory Tower canon of power fall into meaninglessness. Evoking childhood memories of the "telephone" game, Martinez implies that repeated transmission bring outs corruption in the historical continuum. Boxe for instance, features adduces from Aristotle, Marcus Aurelius, Cicero and Kant applied to the Plexiglas surfaces of four light boxe along with photographic images of war and blood-chilling brutality. The photos simultaneously lurid and grotesquely illustrate the implications of the body s The viewer must guess the identity of the pictured conflicts. Are those southern African soldiers shooting rubber bullet across a field? What is the source of the discharge of two Muslim women, shown in the jiffy just before a swinging baseball bat is to come down on their defenseless arms and heads? The American soldiers arresting dozens of naked Asian men are presumably photographed in Vietnam, on the other hand can we be sure? The fourth image is of dead bodies beneath some trees by a wall, variegated shrouds of sheets and blankets sparing us the sight of plenteous more than a foot or a bloodstain. This is vicious imagery, its limits dictated by the times. Racism is the provocation in the sandwich-counter marquee of Remember a certain quantity of White People Are Very Nice nation Too and the security-mirror-as-Gorgon-shield in The Face of Hate. In the altered portraits of idealized young white lads of Hierarchy of Defeat, the face of redneck fascism has rarely appeared more abhorrently guileless - shades of Lord of the Flies superseding hints of child abuse. In these and other constructions, Martinez demonstrates an ambitious and vitriolic social critique. His acerbic powers of observation make an incision in laserlike, to the poetic core of divisive issues. COPYRIGHT 1993 Brant Publications, Inc.
