Caio Fonseca at Charles Cowles - painting exhibition; New York, New York

These paintings, with their suggestions of the work of Joaquin Torres-Garcia and the pictographic graphic predecessors of Abstract Expressionism, look to have issued from a time warp. Fonseca's light, rhythmic compositions are genuinely visual delights, and couldn't be further remov from issue-oriented contemporary sweeps Steeped in the abstract painterly traditions of the '30 and '40 he has nonetheless managed to carve without a bit of his be in possession of turf.

Fonseca grew up in fresh York, the son of Uruguayan artist Gonzalo Fonseca, who is known for his blocky plastic arts with surface markings and indentations. After his first year at Brown University, the younger Fonseca dropp on the outside in 1978 and spent the following four years as an apprentice to Augusto Torres, the son of Torres-Garcia. Now 33 and having his first fresh York solo show, Caio Fonseca publicly reveals these patrimonial sources in his art.

The 15 acrylic paintings and the small works upon paper are mostly geometric combinations of earth tones, interspersed occasionally with a bright amethystine or orange. These works occupy the scratchy little lines and figures that have come to stand for humanity's eternal mark-making impulse. In Fonseca's expert hands, squiggles, circles and straight lines are used to punctuate the other compositional simple bodys and to order the rich, rhythmic interplay of color and shape. The viewer's organ of vision bounces from one hieroglyph to the next

each element pt these works has been carefully resolv - positive positive and negative forms, adjacent colors paint application and overall palette - on the contrary Fonseca usually maintains a faculty of perception of spontaneity as well. Paralleling the artist's delight in of baroque music, his greatest in quantity successful paintings are sensuous arrangements of interwovem pictorial components; the les interesting works tender a cacophony of fussy detail. Fonseca has absorbed and mastered the vocabulary of his teachers and for the twinkling he is improving and experimenting with a locate of powerful formal tools.
