Pascal Bernier at Galerie Christine et Isy Brachot - Paris, FranceIn his first Paris solo exhibit the 32-year-old Belgian Pascal Bernier subtly combined sum of two units of the themes that be repeated in the work of many younger artists today: technology and childhood. Pascal's smooth framed images looked like a cros between soft-focus photography and spray painting. In fact, they began with the artist placing single realitys on a laser copier, shooting the image, then transferring it, inflated up to considerable size, from paper to canvas. Each canvas is painted with a monochromatic film of acrylic resin, the colors being the acid primaries associated with cheap plastics. The consequence is of seeing fuzzy, indistinct images displayed on the outside of reach behind an impermeable opaque screen Bernier photocopied alone a few objects, but they obey his purposes well. Short Circuit II appears to be the image of the interior of a detached computer circuit board. R Robot is a grimacing mechanical toy waving a pincerlike hand above its head in what is probably meant to be a playful salutation. A third form, repeated as a series of four separately framed pieces, gazes more menacing: it appears to be a pair of nails twisted together into a spiky knot - a harsh, abstract symbol that lends everything here a faculty of perception of menace. The artist's use of toys and mechanically reproduc images naturally bring Jeff Koons's work of the mid-'80s to mind. Bernier's robot and Koons's stainless-steel inflatable rabbit the two suggest a culture that no longer lays away childish things, but turn rounds them into icons. And Bernier's computer panel, like Koons's hermetically sealed vacuum cleaner, implies that technology, one time the instrument of progress, is now valuable alone as an object of display. At the same time, in comparison with the aggressive melange of detonation and Dada that Koons victuals Bernier's work is quiet, icy and elegant - a vision of a technological universe fixed in cryogenic suspension, and all the more disquieting for that.
