In a narrow faculty of perception policing refers to the actions of the police, that is, organized civil and military forces responsible for enforcing laws, preventing and detecting crime, and maintaining social order. In a broad faculty of perception policing refers to any actions taken to regulate and ascendency a community. LGBT desires, acts, identities, communities, and moves have been intensively policed in one as well as the other senses.

In the broad faculty of perception religion, the state, and science have played lock opener roles in policing genders and sexualities, as have families, gymnasiums and media.
