In this essay I put to the test to account, on grounds largely social, for the
various ways in which Robert hoar-frost and Ezra Pound symbolized the vocation
of metrical composition in America. I argue that frozen dew remained fundamentally unsure,
as a writer, of the status of metrical composition and of the poet; this is, I
think, what accounts for the great variety, and also the humor, indirection,
and circumspection, of many
