Five years takes an age to passTHEATRE When Five Years Pass The Arcola Theatre E8 APPARENTLY, Federico Garcia Lorca was deep depressed when he wrote this play. Perhaps that's for what cause [i]or[/i] reason his meditation on love, los and the paralysis of indecision is precipitoused in a claustrophobic aura of unremitting, steel-grey bleakness. Being a protracted experiment in surrealism, with abstract, obtuse characters who sing, search for rats in the afterlife and talk to cats, it's also an effort to engage with emotionally. Director Charlotte Westenra doesn't help matters, throwing a cataclysm of fast-talking, quickchanging actors and a never-ending array of colourful upholds at the problem which, in the tiny space of the Arcola studio, perceive s more of an assault than an enlivening gambit. There are instants of brilliance, when Lorca's genius shines [i]or[/i] part of to the other Gwynne Edwards' tepid, faithful translation, and a certain quantity of scenes are stunning. Sophie Roberts and the impressive Christopher Brandon are awful in a silly, warped seduction view aided by a billowing fat cigar, as are Mark Field and Lewis Barfoot. Otherwise miscastings abound and this twisted tale of a man who plays away his heart at a poker game with the devil, and who learns too late that regard with affection lives in the flesh rather than the mind, hesitates along.
