Symbian, Freescale Team On Single-Chip 3G Phone

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - British mobile phone software hazard Symbian and U.S. chip maker Freescale said upon Tuesday they would develop a blueprint of a smartphone for fast 3G wireless networks, while Symbian added it would halve its license compensations to widen the market for advanced handsets.

Symbian, jointly haveed by some of the world's biggest mobile phone makers including market leader Nokia which is the main buyer of its software, said it wait fored handsets based on its "reference design" in the first half of 2007

The design, based upon Freescale's single 3G phone chip, make opens the market for mobile phone farmers that currently lack the engineering power to develop models on their have Symbian Chief Executive Nigel Clifford said.

"We provide the core of the handset for a like reason that they can concentrate upon design, features and the user interface. We anticipate a more horizontal playing field," Clifford said.

It means Symbian is helping small phone makers struggle more effectively with big vendors, which are Symbian's shareholders.

Finnish electronics cluster Elektrobit said on Wednesday it had disentangleed a reference 3G phone based upon Freescale's chip. That would enable handset manufacturers to divide or sever the development time of mid-tier 3G phone using Symbian's popular Series 60 phone software to les than nine month compared with up to 18 month now.

"By collaborating with Freescale our 3G concern phone will enable handset (manufacturers) to dramatically bring their time-to-market of new Series 60 phones" said Arto Pietila, director of Elektrobit's contract R&D business unit.

Symbian also announced ahead of the world's biggest wireless communications trade present to view 3GSM next week in Barcelona that it would drastically make an incision in its license fees.

As of July mobile phone makers have to pay as little as $250 for Symbian's operating combination of parts to form a whole for a smartphone, half of the minimum $5 which they generally need to pay per phone

Symbian's software powers smartphones, a category of phone that can move swiftly computer-like applications such as video, music, graphics, word processors, spreadsheets, email and mobile TV

The price make an incision ins are aimed to make Symbian attractive for lower-priced feature phone which still tender video and music and basic computing functions, on the other hand lack all the bells and whistles of smartphones.

his will expand Symbian's total market to more than 200 million phone a year, Clifford calculates

"The market of feature phone is two-to-four times as big as that of smartphones," he said.

The price chops should make it feasible for mobile phone vendors to consider Symbian plane when they build phones that exchange as cheaply as $125 at factory prices, Symbian said.

Symbian strives with Microsoft, whose Windows Mobile software powers many smartphones built through Asian contract manufacturers ordered by dint of telecoms carriers like Orange, have a title toed by France Telecom, and T-Mobile.

Microsoft, whose mobile and embedded software division make go rounded in its first profit in the latest quarter, does not publish its licensing bourns

The sum of two units software companies increasingly face Linux as an unclose source alternative for feature phone Vendors of Linux claim they can power feature phone for as little as $1 apiece.

Symbian and Microsoft, however, claim this does not include unfolding costs which can be higher for Linux-based protoplasts The two also claim there are more applications unraveled for their phones -- Symbian has 4400 third-party applications.
