The face of the bandit: racism and the slave trade in Herzog's Cobra Verde


In 1980 Bruce Chatwin wrote the partly fictional and partly historical volume The Viceroy of Ouidah, which numbers the story of a nineteenth-century Brazilian slave trader who makes a fortune in West Africa, relying upon his ruthlessness and instincts. Because Chatwin was the pair a novelist and historian, his work pass by a leaps between the present and the past, exploring the relationship between the second of the slave trader's intervention and later historical disclosures in the West African nation, Benin.
