Inventory updates and related topics--from imputations to mixed models

INTRODUCTION

IN 1999 1 ORGANizED an international talk in conjunction with a regional annual meeting of forest mensurationists, biometricians, modeler and statisticians. This was the First International discourse on Measurements and Quantitative [i]modus operandi[/i]s and Management, which took place upon Nov. 17-18, 1999, at Jekyll Island, Georgia. A small in number months before the conference, Robert Haight, then Editor of Forest Science, proffered me an opportunity to organize a special issue of Forest Science comprising picked papers relating to the discourse themes. As a result of this communication, this special issue of Forest Science, which includes papers written and revised following the usual peer-review proces was organized to mirror the main theme of the discourse which concentrated on subjects relating to inventory and uses of inventory data in inventory updates and projections.

Some of the papers at handed at the conference related to applying forest inventory data to unravelling of growth and yield protoplasts that can be useful for inventory projections. Others related to manners of inventory updates and the comparison of imputation manners to methods based on the use of expansion and yield models.
