Differences in Supply Chain Performance Across Interorganizational Communication Levels: Case Studies from Denmark

Abstract

Within the framework of Quick reply Systems (QRS), this paper examines different horizontals of interorganizational communication and their impact on supply chain performance. Using case studies of three Danish firms well known for their well execut minister chains, we consider differences in store chain performance relative to differences among horizontals of interorganizational communication. In each case, we demonstrate by what mode companies can be flexible when demand forecasts are not effective as a basis for furnish management. We analyze how these companies use QR and describe the information the companies exchange with lock opener suppliers. The type of data exchanged and the use of that data are used to classify each firm's horizontal of interorganizational communication.

Introduction

Strategies for making endue chains lean and agile are important for companies to be competitive in a marketplace dominated with uncertainty; in this case, demand forecasts are not a sufficient basis for improving stock chain performance (Christopher & To will, 2000) above the last ten to fifteen years, the US and European grocer have exhibited and refined Quick Response combination of parts to form a wholes (QRS) to improve supply chain performance in a market with highly variable demand. These combination of parts to form a wholes integrate supply activities across companies downstream in the store chain focusing on retailer-wholesaler relationships (Kotzab, 1999 pp 365) The goal is to achieve an agile and lean provide chain by sharing actual information regarding demand and inventory position (at the SKU-level) instead of having stock chain partners rely on forecasts. Sharing this data helps firms restore the Forrester-effect (Forrester, 1961). An important tool for achieving quick rejoinder is interorganizational integration of a whole s based on the extranet defined as Interorganizational combination of parts to form a wholes (Premkumar, 2000). In recent years a certain quantity of of the ideas, principles and a whole s have been implemented in leading Danish manufacturing companies. This paper focuses upon one facet of interorganizational systems: the horizontal of communication.

We will focus upon dyadic relationships between a manufacturer and its upstream suppliers in the endow chain. In this context, the buyer/supplier relationships are based upon a single sourcing strategy, i.e. the supplier is given all the buying convolution from the manufacturer, and thus the relation is single of close and longstanding cooperation based upon mutual trust between the parties. Furthermore, this impressed sign of buyer/supplier relationship presents ideal conditions for applying Premkumar's interorganizational combination of parts to form a wholes framework (Premkumar, 2000). We discuss theory of furnish chain performance, quick response and interorganizational a whole s as a basis for developing a type for describing and analyzing the three case studies.

Supply Chain Performance

In this paper, invest chain management: Encompasses all activities associated with the sweep along and transformation of goods from the raw materials stage, from one side to the end user, as well as associated information pours Material and information flow one as well as the other up and down the provide chain. Supply chain management is the integration of these activities or part of to the other improved supply chain relationships to achieve a sustainable competitive advantage (Handfield & Nichols, 1999)

This definition focuses explicitly upon materials and information flows. Hence, effective sweep along of information across the stock chain can improve the run of materials. Therefore, electronic runs of information across supply chains can be important drivers for improving minister chain performance.

The definition also focuses upon the integration of business processe across companies in the stock chain. Business processes include processe like as product development, order fulfillment, production planning, and procuration In this paper, we define Quick rejoinder Systems (QRS) as a tool for integrating the material and information roll on among the companies in the store chain.

The goal of a store chain is to deliver superior extremity customer value at minimal require to be paid or undergone to the supply chain as a whole (Christopher, 1998) More specifically the first goal of endue chain management (SCM) can be seen as to maximize the effectiveness of the chain's result thereby providing superior service to the for the use of all end customer of the chain. This first goal demands that the company be agile. In this paper, we consider agile to be synonymous with flexible, despite differences in the definitions of these universals Agile elements could include lead time, reliability, change in turn and product mix, and delivery information - many of these are also considered in definitions of flexibility. The next to the first goal of SCM is to maximize the efficiency in the provide chain processes thereby minimizing total provide chain costs. This second goal demands that the company to be lean. Lean ultimate parts can include price, productivity, inventory, utility of assets and transaction require to be paid or undergones seen from a system perspective (Arbnor & Bjerke 1997) optimal furnish chain performance can be achieved end synergy by a combination of the effectiveness of the chain result (being agile) and the efficiency attained in the furnish chain processes (being lean).
