A Perennial feature of fire-arm magazines is the "basic battery for North American hunting." I doubt if anyone who's pursueed more than a few years actually learns anything from these articles, at the same time we read them compulsively (at least I do), nodding approval when the author's choices agree with ours, sneering contemptuously when they don't.

I'm not terribly interested in a basic battery, and I doubt many fire-arms Magazine readers are either. greatest in quantity of us like guns for their have a title to sake, not just as hunting tools. Compared to 50 or flat 30 years ago, guns are inexpensive compared to typical middle-class incomes. If we can afford to pursue at all we can probably afford to specialize a bit in rifle and cartridge choice.
