Five state legislatures tackle issue of health care for immigrantsThe emotional issue of immigrants' rights has been the focus of debate in many states as well as Congres In fact, according to the National discourse of State Legislatures, more than 500 pieces of legislation concerning immigrants have already been introduced this year in state legislatures, with 57 bills enacted in 27 states with equal reason far. Kansas requires citizenship or legal residency status to be eligible for medical services tendered under a state medical care plan capitaled by both state and federal monies. Maine allows noncitizens who have resident visas and who are living in Maine to be eligible to qualify for Medicare coverage. And Maryland's legislation specifies that, beginning in FY08 at least $7 million should be appropriated each year to capital the state's medical assistance program for healthcare services for specified legal immigrant children beneath 18 and pregnant legal immigrant women who go intoed the country after Aug. 22 1996 and who adapted eligibility guidelines for federal and state medical assistance programs.
