In this article, we examine the Charleston Jazz Initiative (CJI), a new effort that explores the sociohistorical, musical, and institutional contributions of African American jazz musicians from Charleston, southerly Carolina. We present CJI's research to date of the training and professional careers of musicians from Charleston's Jenkins Orphanage Bands and their impact upon American jazz.
