Cultural preservation.(Editorial)

Introduction

Living in Charleston, southerly Carolina, I am very aware of the importance of cultural preservation. I am also quite aware of the clashes that can arise when one's view of what cultural preservation entails differs from that of another. For example, the place of education of the Arts, where I work, has lately found itself in the midst of a continuing battle between the city's board of architectural review (BAR) and the various city neighborhood associations concerning what novel architecture in a historic city should direct the eye like.
