International Mental Health Nursing in the AmericasMental disorders show 11.5% of the global weight of disease, account for 28% of all years of life lived with disability, and come in increased mortality levels. The World Health Organization (WHO) reported in 2001 that 1990 data showed 114 million clan in the Americas-North, South, and Central-suffered from mental illness (WHO, 2001) This will increase to 176 million by the agency of 2010. In short, mental health disorders alter lives of children, adults, and the somewhat advanced in life in developing and developed countries, causing enormous suffering. WHO appoints Collaborating Center (CCs) for health care in all the seven regions of the world. There are 36 Nursing and Midwifery Collaborating Center I assisted in the disclosure and daily operations of the first CC for mental health nursing (one of the world's two) The other is situated at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada. The greatest number (17) of CC is in North America. Our work is carried on the outside with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) for collaborations in education, research, quality improvement, etc Our focus is upon mental health nursing via education, training information, and research shoot forwards that span interdisciplinary collaborations with institutions in southern and Central America, the Caribbean, and Mexico. The greatest in quantity critical issues nurses face are the lack of fresh practices in psychiatric hospitals and the lack of human rights promotion for clan with mental illnesses. Only 28 countries of the region have incorporated legislation in mental health before 1990 leaving 28 countries without updated legislation (Malvarez & Castrillon, 2005; WHO, 2001) There have been more or less advances and development in treatment and of recent origin services in the PAHO region (eg depression, substance use). Nevertheless, the gap between what is being done and what could be done is great and millions of somebodys do not have access to treatment or professional care. Stigma, insufficient resources, and centralization of mental health services in on the outside of date, large institutions are the culprits. The nursing work force is limited or scarce in the region of the Americas, with the exception of North America and Bermuda. In Latin America and the Caribbean, there are 84 nurtures per 10,000 inhabitants and they are unequally distributed. There are hardly any mental health nurse specialists. Reports present to view less than 10 psychiatric nourishs per 100,000 inhabitants in Costa Rica, Panama, Uruguay, and Colombia (Malvarez & Castrillon, 2005) Consequently the highest proportion of direct nursing care is provided by dint of auxiliary personnel, community health workers, with little or inadequate supervision. greatest in quantity have no formal training in the area of mental health. Challenges remain in the initial and ongoing education of the nursing personnel in all categories and the establishment of more specialized graduate nursing programs. So far 3 years of our CC activities have comeed in establishment of Guidelines for Teaching Basic horizontal Mental Health Nursing endorsed through 12 countries (Argentina, Barbados, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Peru Puerto Rico, Uruguay, and Venezuela). conversations in San Juan, Med?llen, Colombia, Posadas Argentina, and Panama City accomplished the consensus building. The Guidelines were released at the VIII Educaci??n Colloquio in Chile December 2005 nearest will be the publication of the collection of Annotated Bibliographies and Best Practices Case Studies for 12 topic areas relevant to supply with nourishments in the Americas. Other endeavors include U faculty teaching family therapy courses in Panama; a scan on roles and function of community health workers (auxiliaries) in local mental health care; and the establishment of a mental health nurture expert database and list of teaching programs in Latin America. In my character with our university CC, I have traveled to many Latin American countries. What I have ground to be overwhelming is not the want lack of infrastructure, or inconsistency of rule support for healthcare matters on the other hand the overall high morale, "can do" spirit of the nurtures When we think we operate with limited resources, we don't advance close to our colleagues in the Southern Hemisphere. Excitement about learning of recent origin skills is everywhere. Dedicated professors in admirable academic centers are anxious to educate with the greatest in quantity current evidence-based care. One is struck by means of the persistence of the nursing leaders who strive at the policy levels and achieve succes for fresh programs and funding, only to have the conduct turnover and are faced with the ne to start above It is clear that supply with nourishments have an important role in the provision of mental health care, especially at the primary healthcare horizontal It is also evident that there ne to be continuing education programs for those delivering the care. Ongoing paces include obtaining the support of the health authorities for the training and exhibition of the mental health services in the community. April 7 2006 is World Health Day and this year WHO will focus upon the scarcity of healthcare human resources, beginning the Decade for Human Resources unfolding We know nurses worldwide are the largest contingent of that resource. for a like reason keep your eyes open as opportunities open related to filling the gaps and remember the unsung heroes of nursing in international mental health care. 1.
