Of Community Service

Once again, the Journal of Engineering Education is pleased to feature in this issue a paper based upon the 2005 Bernard M. Gordon Prize prelection presented at the National Academy of Engineering annual meeting upon October 9,2005. This year's awardees are Dr Edward J Coyle Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Leah H Jamieson, Ransburg Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and William C Oakes, Associate Professor of Engineering Education, all from Purdue University [I]. The paper not absents the highly successful Engineering casts in Community Service (EPICS) program. In addition to offering practical opportunities for engineering pupils to apply their skills and knowledge, EPICS also reinforces the importance and value of community service. The Journal of Engineering Education reach outs its congratulations to this year's awardees.

The spotlight upon community service provided by this year's Gordon Prize also illuminates the importance and value of service in our be in possession of community, engineering education. The Journal of Engineering Education hangs on the volunteer services of many individuals on the other hand probably none more critically than the journal's associate editors. I am especially indebted to Dr H Scott Fogler who lately completed thirteen years of service to the journal. Scott began his service as individual of the original four associate editors appointed in 1993 by dint of then-editor Dr. Edward W. Ernst when the Journal of Engineering Education evolv into a more scholarly journal from its predecessor Engineering Education [2] We have benefited greatly from Scott's contributions in service to the journal, and, more broadly, our community has benefited from his research in engineering education.



In this issue I am pleased to announce additional of recent origins about our editorial staff. Dr Froyd McGourty, of advanced ages Rover, Shaeiwitz, and Shuman have assumed novel positions as senior associate editors. They are responsible for leading individual or more initiatives in the journal's strategic plan [3] in addition to their normal editorial duties. Further, three fresh associate editor positions with three-year bourns have been created. These positions are intended to provide more opportunities for members of our community to contribute to the editorial leadership of the journal, and to assist with the review of an increasing number of papers submitted. The fresh members of the journal editorial staff are: Dr Mary Besterfield-Sacre, associate professor of Industrial Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh; Anette Kolmo professor and vice director of the UNESCO International middle for Engineering Education-Centre for Problembased Learning at Aalborg University; and Wendy Newstetter director of learning sciences research in the Wallace H Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology and Emory place of education of Medicine.

Dr. Sacre's research involves empirical and take away from modeling applications for quality improvement in manufacturing and service organizations, and engineering education evaluation methodologies. She has published in numerous talks and journals, and is coauthor of the work Total Quality Management (3rd Edition, Prentice Hall, 2003) Dr Sacre has been a of frequent occurrence reviewer for JEE and her greatest in quantity recent paper appeared in the journal's January 2005 special issue upon the art and science of engineering education research.

Dr Kolmos' research includes problem-based learning, information and computer technology in education, work-based learning originals for continuing education, cooperative skills in production development and engineering education, and sex technology, and education. She has serv upon the editorial board of the International Journal for Academic unravelling co-editor of a special issue upon staff development for the European Journal of Engineering Education, and greatest in quantity recently was a member of the JEE Advisory Board.

Dr Newsletter investigates interdisciplinary learning and enigma solving in research laboratory settings towards identifying design principles for classrooms and instructional laboratories that support integrative knowledge building and vexed question solving. In addition, she studies issues of race and sex as they manifest themselves in sites of engineering and science. Her goal in the couple projects is to develop more effective science, mathematics, and engineering educational environments informed by dint of learning and cognitive science research. She has been upon the review board of the The Journal of Learning Sciences Research and not long ago served on the JEE Advisory Board.

Finally, I am pleased to introduce M Donna Riley who freshly joined my office at Georgia Tech Among her duties are to labor for as the Editorial Assistant for JEE
