Physical Therapists' Knowledge of Physical Elder Abuse-Signs, Symptoms, Laws, and Facility Protocols

ABSTRACT

Background and Purpose: It is estimated that alone 1 in 5 cases of senior abuse is reported. Physical therapists (PTs) should recognize senior abuse and how to report it. The intent of this study was to determine the knowledge that PT posses in 3 areas of abuse management: recognition of signs/symptoms of physical abuse, awareness of state mandatory reporting laws, and knowledge of facility protocols for reporting abuse. An additional final cause was to determine the oftenness PTs suspected elder abuse and the compliance to Michigan law, which requires the reporting of suspected abuse by the agency of the health care worker. Method: A contemplate was distributed to 400 randomly chosen licensed PT who reside in individual county in Michigan; 137 views were completed for a 36% get back rate with 31% being usable. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and independent t-test Results: Facility training was a significant factor in the knowledge of the mandatory reporting law. INTRODUCTION

The part of the population over the age of 65 in the United States is growing quickly. by the agency of the year 2020, it is shoot forwarded that 64 million people will be 65 years of age or older1 commonly 4.5% of people of that age cohort live in a nursing facility.2 This percentage increases in the oldest of the aged (greater than 85 years of age). With an increase in age there is a propensity towards disability. Seventy-three percent of individuals above the age of 80 years report at least individual disability.3 Activities that may be difficult because of a disability include tasks like as using the toilet, bathing, dressing, eating, and mobility.

As Americans age, they may become more hanging upon families and health care organizations to suitable their everyday needs, thus leaving the individual reliant upon the care of others. Adequate hygiene and nutrition, appropriate medication schedules, and other activities of daily living are important when someone is hanging on others for care. The quality of care-giving relationships can vary between warm and caring to heedless and abusive.4 The very nature of concatenation may lead to unconscious or conscious acts of abuse or neglect5 A rise of the number of individuals living into their eighth and ninth decades and the ne for more assistance with everyday activities caused the National Council upon Aging to become concerned about their care. As early as 1958 they began to lobby for the protection and the care giving of incapacitated and isolated elders.These discussions l to the origination of Adult Protective Services (APS), which investigates and intervenes in cases of older abuse.6

The US Administration upon Aging conducted a study to form a baseline measurement of the incidence of senior abuse. This was done in part because official state reporting services, of that kind as APS, were thought to alone receive reports on the "most visible emblems of abuse...but a large number of other incidents are unidentified and unreported."'The incidence of older abuse in the United States in 1996 was approximately 450000 for olders living in a domestic setting.7 These numbers solitary include reported abuse.
