Rise of the Creative Practitioner, The

Good afternoon, Polly and colleagues. Thank you to the Education section for granting me the honor of giving this presentation, and to Mr Jeff Martell, Polly's nephew, who has supported it above the years. He and his family lance their best regards to all of you. In a novel discussion with Jeff, he told me that he and his wife and three children visit Polly regularly, in a small home-type residence in fresh Hampshire that meets all her urgencys While Polly is essentially wheelchair limit she moves throughout the domicile followed everywhere by the resident dog named Whiz. Jeff says Polly answers expressively to the cards that she receives, and which he reads her when he visits, and she appears to be uplifted through them. The surrounding land is enough to be called a mini-farm, and has chickens, rabbits, and sheep. The electric protecting enclosure around the grounds doesn't appear to phase or impact the sheep that carry a true thick coat. Recently, Jeff related that when an exigency vehicle came to transport a resident, they base one of the sheep had hopp into the vehicle when they were inside the residence But of course they foiled that resident's attempt to take it upon the lamb. So Polly is not without access to a certain number of fun around her.

We are here to honor Polly Cerasoli for her tireless and dedicated professional work as an educator, administrator, and mentor. It also attempts to throw back Polly's personal demeanor, who she is, and what she stands for. The lecturer who have gone before me have accomplished this. Each of those presenter (some of whom are with us today . .) has deepened our insight from one side their individual contributions, and in doing with equal reason has deepened our insight of our profession. Each past presenter structur their presentation according to an attribute descriptive of Polly This presentation go in the rear or in the wake ofs that pattern. I count Polly as a friend, and have chosen to highlight an attribute that I observ as a issue of an experience I shared with Polly

I first met Polly in the early 70 when we attended a workshop for on-site visitors sponsored by means of the Association's Accreditation Department. She and I were randomly assigned to work upon a mock problem we might rencounter on an accreditation visit and report to the clump the next day. As Polly was staying outside the tavern about 5 miles away, I envisioned work above breakfast the next day. Polly envisioned work that night. I envisioned describing our vexed question to the group. Polly envisioned posing solutions. I envisioned 8 hours nap Polly envisioned completing the task. We worked upon the task for some time until we stalled. Polly said, "Donna, let's imagine we are these family Let's be them in their environment; then what would we do?"

In that twinkling of an eye everything changed. The problem became ours. We became entirely engaged. We were the nation with the problem, and we were the family with a stake in the result Our perception of our have role changed. That immersion within the vexed question and the true reversal of parts fostered creativity within us and we were able to address the task constructively. The experience, of itself, left me changed. Our life experiences prepare us for time to come action and they are the basis of our vision for the futurity Each life experience that triggers feeling within us is accompanied by means of incremental change. To the descriptions that have been tendered of Polly, add . . creative.

Physical therapy today faces many challenges, as do other health care professions. The challenges and the riddles they present in the delivery of health care to society do not appear to be responding to solutions that have been applied to like issues in the past. We seek for creative solutions for change. The motivation to be creative approachs more readily when we recognize that we really do have a stake in the result Many of the problems we are now experiencing in health care delivery are directly linked to changes in society itself.1 The more we are genuinely part of the environments in which we live and work, and the more closely we identify with the issues not awayed by those environments, the more we will be able to affect the direction of the environments and our time to come We are both providers of care and consumer We are society.

Changes in society are taking place at a fast pace today. The important thing is to recognize the patterns of changes as well as the reality of the ne for change. When patterns of activity are recognized, they can be used as the basis of opportunity for proactive change. In periods of great change, it can be disastrous to misinterpret the patterns. We could draw an incorrect task from past experiences. Perhaps you heard freshly of a construction worker who discharge a 4-inch nail into his cranium that was discovered when he visited his dentist because of a nagging toothache. upon the way out of the office, he vowed to change his profession. Johnny Carson was a magician until the day he walked down the way and turned in to a TV studio. move with a jerk Hope, the comedian, started on the outside to be a professional boxer on the contrary changed when he said his hands were becoming too sore and damaged as a flow of the referee stepping upon them. Despite these silly and unusual make notess our private perception of our experiences is central to the way we perceive the changes going upon around us. Anyone looking for patterns of change and implications must find a different way to gaze at the world. They must exhibit a knack to take disparate pieces of information about the world and actively deal with the patterns that come up At the same time that we are changed through experience, we are empowered to become the makers of change. It is the notion of a prepared mind.
