Religiosity, alcohol expectancies, drinking motives and their interaction in the prediction of drinking among college students.

NUMEROUS STUDIES HAVE lay the foundation of a consistent, albeit modest (-10 to -25) inverse relationship between religiosity and drinking (for reviews, diocese Benson, 1992; Gorsuch, 1995). Several different mechanisms have been propos to account for this relationship, including direct proscriptions against alcohol in various faiths, parental/familial norms, buffering of life stres and participation in nondrinking activities that are temple related (Bock et al., 1987; Forthun et al., 1999; Kendler et al., 1997; Wills et al., 2003) Members of more conservative religious denominations that prohibit alcohol use have depressed rates of consumption and high rates of total abstention (Bock et al., 1987) Controlling
