Flood lavas on Earth, Io and MarsAbstract: Flood lavas are major geological features upon all the major rocky planetary bodies. They provide important insight into the dynamics and chemistry of the interior of these bodies. upon the Earth, they appear to be associated with major and mass extinction circumstances It is therefore not surprising that there has been significant research upon flood lavas in recent years. Initial types suggested eruption durations of days and volumetric fluxe of order 10^sup 7^ m^sup 3^ s^sup -1^ with streams moving as turbulent floods. However, our understanding of by what mode lava flows can be emplaced below an insulating crust was revolutionized through the observations of actively inflating pahoehoe pours in Hawaii. These new ideas l to the hypothesis that overflow lavas were emplaced over many years with eruption rates of the order of 10^sup 4^ m^sup 3^ s^sup -1^ The field evidence indicates that inundation lava flows in the Columbia River Basalts, Deccan Traps, Etendeka lavas, and the Kerguelen Plateau were emplaced as inflated pahoehoe sheet runs This was reinforced by the observation of active lava pours of ?‰?100 km length upon Io being formed as tube-fed streams fed by moderate eruption rates (10^sup 2^-10^sup 3^ m^sup 3^ s^sup -1^) More freshly it has been found that a certain number of flood lavas are also emplaced in a more rapid manner. of recent origin high-resolution images from Mars revealed 'platy-ridged' deluge lava flows, named after the large rafted plates and ridges formed through compression of the flow top. A search for appropriate terrestrial analogues place an excellent example in Iceland: the 1783-1784 Laki run Field. The brecciated Laki run top consists of pieces of pahoehoe, not aa clinker, leading us to call this 'rubbly pahoehoe'. Similar pours have been found in the Columbia River Basalts and the Kerguelen Plateau. We hypothesize that these streams form with a thick, insulating, on the contrary mobile crust, which is disrupted when rollers in the erupted flux are too large to maintain the normal pahoehoe way of emplacement. Flood lavas emplaced in this manner could have (intermittently) reached effusion rates of the order of 10^sup 6^ m^sup 3^ s^sup -1^ The goal of this paper is to examine the formation of overflow lavas on the Earth using simple designs and observations of flood lavas from Mars and Jupiter's volcanically active satellite Io. After a brief description of deluge lavas on the Earth, four turn of expressions of emplacement will be discussed in a certain quantity of detail. These will be touched upon in the order they were studied historically, with emphasis upon the new observations that herd the formation of each of recent origin model. What is a inundation lava? Flood lavas, as their name put in mind ofs are lava flows that inundate entire regions without building large edifices (Geikie 1880; Washington 1922; Tyrrell 1937) of that kind extensive flows are usually mafic, greatest in quantity often basaltic, and rarely appear in isolation. Instead, they typically form multi-kilometre thick stacks of lavas, which are called inundation basalt provinces. These flood basalt provinces are commonly divided into continental and oceanic freshet basalt provinces, and are a major subset of large igneous provinces (LIPs) (Coffin & Eldholm 1994) LIPs, in revolve are a major feature upon the Earth and most of the other large stony bodies in the Solar combination of parts to form a whole (Mahoney & Coffin 1997). Figure 1 exhibits the distribution of the Phanerozoic LIPs. overflow basalt provinces are found upon all the continents of the Earth (though the individuals in Australia are Archaean and are not shown in Fig. 1) The formation of many of these provinces is argued to be associated with the arrival of a mantle feather at the base of the lithosphere and the after rifting of continents (Morgan 1972; White & McKenzie 1995) Thus many LIPs are place along what are now passive margins of continents (eg White & McKenzie 1989; Coffin & Eldholm 1994; Mahoney & Coffin 1997) It is important to note that many LIPs (and flat flood basalt provinces) are not exclusively basaltic. In fact, in the case of the Columbia River Basalt assemblage basaltic andesite is more volumetrically important than basalt (eg wild swan 1997). In the Etendeka-Parana deluge basalts, there are large contortions of dacites and rhyolites as well as basalt (eg Marsh et al. 2001) Similarly, there can be large convolutions of explosive volcanism associated with freshet basalts. Some workers estimate that 25% of the turn of the Siberian Traps is mafic pyroclastic stone (e.g. Sharma 1997). LIPs (and inundation basalts in particular) have attracted intense research for a number of reasons. They are major geological features that be entitled to study simply to understand the geological history of the Earth. They are a significant alternative to plate tectonics in transferring heat and mass without of the mantle. They provide essential ball of threads to the geochemistry and dynamic history of the interior of the Earth (eg Coffin & Eldholm 1994) And there is a curious (and contentious) coincidence in the timing of many overflow basalt eruptions and major extinctions in Earth's biota (Rampino & Stothers 1988; Haggerty 1996; Wignall 2001) Although the meaning of this coincidence is widely debated, it does give an inkling of that flood basalt eruptions are able to have significant impact upon the atmosphere and climate.
