Dead wood : geomorphic effects of coarse woody debris in headwater streams, Great Smoky Mountains.

ABSTRACT--Coarse wooden debris (CWD) is an important constituent of headwater streams. This research compares the distribution, residence time, and geomorphic function of CWD between sum of two units headwater streams, one located in an area of the Great of the nature of smoke Mountains that was logged 80 years ago and the other in an aged growth forest zone. Coarse wooden debris channel obstructions are more of frequent occurrence along the old growth-area stream (30 through 100 m) compared with the logged-area stream (14 through 100 m). Differences in CWD oftenness and size between the sum of two units reaches have important consequences for observ variations in channel morphology and sediment storage.
