Eye on the TARGET

After retiring from teaching and administrating, I decided to dedicate some of my free time to improving my golf game. A novel conversation with a group of teachers made me realize by what means alike golf and education are. the couple are about keeping your organ of sight on the target; failure to do in the way that results in a disastrous situation in no time.

Rectifying a bad situation (a lie) in golf hangs on the ability of the player to analyze the discharge select the right club, and effect the swing with exacting mechanics. A golfer's inability to lay all the elements into single coordinated effort means another bad discharge and likely another bad lie.

Educators have made great strides with defer to to executing the exact mechanics of the teachinglearning act. We know by what means to select appropriate teaching strategies for the universal or skill at hand, and we know in what way to adjust instruction to befitting the needs of individual learners What we often lack is a coordinated effort that includes follow-through by means of those in positions of responsibility outside the classroom.

Our educational enterprise is at the compassion of ever-changing political entities; as a follow national, state, and local initiatives are in constant flowing I was a young teacher when the promise of PL 94-142 (IDEA) made all of us believe that meaningful programs for children with special urgencys would benefit both them and their able compeers Many of our hopes were dashed, however, when more than one-third of anticipated funding was chop and the rules of implementation became in the way that mired in politics that what was best for scholars seemed lost in the rough

No Child Left Behind has been single bad swing following another. While no single can argue the intent of this initiative, its execution is a investigation in how not to play the game. Not alone is follow-through lacking (funding has not ever been at levels originally promised), on the other hand we have taken our organ of vision off the ball. Focused upon the minutia of achieving annual yearly progres we are neglecting what it takes to help pupils become lifelong learners who can function effectively in a democratic society.

In golf each player is assigned a handicap based upon the number of strokes it should take to perfect a round and the actual number a player takes. All golfer strive, end practice, to achieve the lowest handicap possible, which is a sign that they play the course well.

Under rife conditions, educators are saddled with a high handicap and may at no time realize a full measure of succes upon the course until they decide to take replete control of executing actions required to lower their handicap. The challenge to readers is to determine in what manner you can, individually and collectively, lower the handicap in your respective seminarys and classrooms. Practice alone will not be enough. We ne to be engaged in the game.
