Policeman repeatedly suspended: Title VII violations: State law violations: Economic losses: Verdict: Punitive damagesMadrigal v City of Alien Park, U Dist. Ct ed Mich., No. 01-73911, Sept. 82004 Madrigal, 38 who is Mexican American, was the next to the first person of color hired as a patrolman upon a city's police force. Almost immediately after he started the piece of work his police chief allegedly began disciplining him, while not disciplining other officers who were part of similar incidents. He was arrested and jailed after an altercation with his wife, level though other officers had been involved in similar disputes without ramification. During his craft with the force, he was suspended without pay five times, and the chief and the city tried to have him fired. Although Madrigal remains upon the police force, he feeled lost wages and benefits of about $115000 during the five suspension periods. Further, he has been unable to obtain business elsewhere because of the suspensions upon his record and because the police chief publicly listed suspensions in the newspaper. Madrigal and his wife su the city and the police chief, alleging disparate treatment and hostile work environment in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 42 USC ?§?§ 2000e et seq Plaintiffs also alleged state law violations. Plaintiffs fighted the police chief and the city repeatedly disciplined him and attempted to have him fired because he is a Mexican American.
